KOJAGARI LAKSHMI PUJA

Kojagari Lakshmi Puja - “Kojagori” a Bengali word (কে জাগে রে) meaning “who is awake?” Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is celebrated on Sharad Purnima (the day of the full moon in lunar month of Ashwin). The date signals the end of the rainy season and the start of harvesting and autumn (Sharad season).

The scientific meaning of the Sharad Purnima is that the Earth is in close proximity to the Moon and this is believed to provide several curative properties if food is kept under moon light prior to consumption. This is why the Lakshmi puja takes place during a full moon and people who are awake (Kojagore) are openly invited to have Prasadam or the purified food.
