Special Membership Campaign

Become a BPCSV member during this Durga Puja

Who is eligible to become a BPCSV member?

1. Any person who supports the purposes of BPCSV is eligible to apply for membership.

The constitution does not restrict eligibility exclusively to people of Bengali origin. The key requirement is that the person supports the purposes of the Association.

2. Each family member should join individually.

Rule 8 states that each person in a member family should become an individual member so they can express their own interests and aspirations, vote where eligible, influence resolutions and actively contribute to the organisation's objectives.

Conditions for membership

Under Rules 9–14:

  • Application: The applicant must complete and sign the prescribed membership application form, confirm support for BPCSV's purposes and agree to comply with the constitution.

  • Approval: The Executive Committee decides by majority resolution whether to accept or reject the application.

  • Special approval: Under Rule 10(5), an applicant who previously caused disharmony in the community or whose actions were proven to be subversive to the Association's purpose must have their admission endorsed at a Special General Meeting (SGM).

  • Membership fees: Applicable joining fees, annual subscriptions and annual events organising fees must be considered under the relevant rules.

  • Members under 18: They are associate members and cannot vote.

  • Voting eligibility: A member must be a non-associate member, more than 10 business days must have passed since they became a member, and their membership rights must not be suspended.

Can a non-Bengali person become a member?

Yes. Based on the wording of Rule 8, any person who supports BPCSV's purposes may apply. The rule does not expressly require Bengali ethnicity, nationality or religious affiliation.

However, membership is not automatic: the applicant must follow the application process and the Executive Committee must approve the application, subject to the special SGM requirement in Rule 10(5).

Important distinction: Eligibility to apply does not automatically confer voting rights. Voting is governed separately by Rule 13(2).
